1. To show support for the mother of your baby, as well as to stay informed, attend all prenatal doctor appointments. When the mother and baby are given a clean bill of health, it will put your mind at ease. And if there are any problems, you’ll know about them right away and be able to address them quickly. Your presence at all scheduled appointments will also be of great comfort to the mother.

2. Don’t leave all the planning to the mother. There are many things that must be considered when planning for the arrival of a newborn, and you and the mother should be making all decisions together, from what your baby will wear to where he or she is going to sleep. By discussing these things well in advance, you and the mother will be free to enjoy the baby’s birth will little stress.

3. Be supportive of any nutritional or exercise programs the expecting mother is participating in. If she is abstaining from something during the pregnancy, join her so she won’t feel so deprived. You could quit drinking for the duration of the pregnancy just as she has. If the mother is taking daily walks because her doctor advised her to do so, you can walk alongside her to show your support. Little things like this go a long way.

4. If you smoke, take this opportunity to quit once and for all. Secondhand smoke is not healthy for the expectant mother or the baby. You should not smoke around the baby after the birth either. This is not only because it’s not healthy, but also because it sets a bad example for your child.

5. Pitch in around the house. Help with the chores the mother usually does. Being pregnant takes a toll on the body and makes seemingly simple chores painful or uncomfortable. You can help a lot by taking over these duties at least until the baby comes.

6. Talk to other fathers you know. You can gain a great deal of knowledge and support by doing this. You will not only get great tips from experienced fathers, but you’ll probably hear some heartwarming stories as well.

As you can see, you don’t have to feel helpless about the impending arrival of your baby. This is one birthday that you can look forward to, knowing you’ve done what you can to make the mother’s life easier and make sure the health of your child.
