Dealing With Your Family’s Reaction to Your Pregnancy

When someone finds out they are pregnant, one of the first things they do is tell their family and close friends. Many people will have different suggestions on what to do during your pregnancy, which can be a little overwhelming and confusing. Here are some ways to deal with the different reactions people will have regarding your pregnancy.

Finding out you are expecting might be one of the happiest moments of your life. Although most people will share your joy, you might find there are others who are not as enthusiastic about it. Do not let other people’s feelings ruin your happiness. There will always be some people who might think you are too young or not ready to be a mom. You might also get some resentment from someone who has been unable to conceive and feels it is unfair you are pregnant. Try to understand their point of view, however, it is best to avoid these type of people as much as possible. Staying away from negativity during this time will help you have a more happy and stress-free pregnancy.

When announcing your pregnancy, try to tell all your family and friends at the same time. This avoids conflicts and arguments over who was told first and last. The last thing you want during this stressful time is to listen to complaints and debates on how they were the last to find out.

It is very common for people to want to rub your belly when you are pregnant. While most women do not mind having their belly rubbed, some women do not feel comfortable with it. If you are one of those women who do not like having your belly rubbed, make sure to tactfully let people know how you feel. The fact you are pregnant does not automatically give people the right to touch you. Don’t let people coerce you into something you feel uncomfortable with.

Once people find out you are expecting a baby, they will bombard you with tons of advice on how to handle your pregnancy. If this is your first pregnancy, there will be those people who think because they have already been through it, they know more than you. They will often criticize things you do during your pregnancy and tell you what you should do instead. Remember that this is your pregnancy and to do what you want not what others want you to do.

Many times a couple does not want to find out the sex of the baby they are having. They want to experience the surprise of knowing what it is when the baby is born. Many people will tell you that it is better if you know to be able to prepare the nursery and all the clothes better. If you want to keep the sex of your baby a surprise, do not let others influence your choice. You can always opt for neutral colors which will work well for both a girl or a boy. You do not want to be persuaded into something that you might later regret.

As you can see, there are many things you have to deal with when you announce you are pregnant. While most people have you and your baby’s best interest at heart, it is important to remember that you and your partner should be the ones making all the important decisions during your pregnancy.
